A story often concludes with the winning of a league title. In the case of Babar Azam, it appears to have begun a new one.
By bringing major winner Peshawar Zalmi to the PSL 2026 trophy, Babar could not simply celebrate the outcome, but rather used the event to redefine his own personal perception of his own career as it goes forward. This was not about winning or losing, it was about runs or records to a player who has spent months under the microscope. It was about control.
Rather than being dragged into discussions about form or criticism, Babar pushed the boundaries further, to something larger, his identity as an all-format cricketer. At a time when most players are gravitating towards certain forms, he resisted the very notion, making it evident that he is not willing to restrict himself.
And that’s where this story becomes interesting.
Since this is not merely a statement, it is a reply. A reaction to the clatter surrounding his recent performances, the anticipations which attend his name, the incessant comparisons which follow him. Instead of justifying his figures, he decided to discuss the way he would like to play the game.
There is also a slight faith in that method. When players are under pressure, they will tend to shift their focus. Babar is doing just the reverse of this, he is extending it. That implies faith, and not skepticism.
That attitude is upheld in his PSL campaign. He did not force an inning or chase form, but instead he appeared calm and assembled innings in a very clear manner and then ended as one of the most consistent batters in the tournament. It was not like a comeback, it was like starting over.
And now, as international cricket is now in sight, the challenge will be different. The expectations will be back, the spotlight will increase and the conversations will change once again. However, this time around, it appears that Babar is dictating his own terms.
The greatest thing that may happen in the career of a cricketer is not necessarily a change in his or her technique –
it lies in how they decide to react to all the things that are surrounding them.
