With this gesture the BCCI has again brought the Impact Player rule to the fore and invited all the IPL franchises to give their thoughts on the rule. The board will take up a number of issues related to the recently completed season, and teams will have until August 31 to provide feedback.
The development is significant, as the Impact Player rule had been thought to be in place for at least another season. But with BCCI explicitly asking opinions from the franchisees, its fate may be up for grabs in preparation for the next edition of the IPL.
It has caused controversy amongst players and experts since it was introduced. It provides teams with more tactical flexibility, but some of the top Indian players, including Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel and Shubman Gill, have voiced concerns about the effect it could have on the bowlers. The recent season had also a lot of high-scoring games, which fueled the discussion as to whether the rule has become toouitly batsman orientated.
The BCCI’s application comes in the wake of its regular post season review process. Franchises have been encouraged to discuss cricket operations issues within their own team and provide a consolidated feedback on the issues they feel are relevant and worthy of attention before the next tournament.
The Impact Player is one of a number of topics that are being examined. The board has also asked for comments on the aspect of umpiring, practice sessions, playing conditions and match-day operations.
Security and management of the Player and Match Officials Area (PMOA) is also being reviewed. This became a talking point last season when people were spotted in the cordoned-off zone without permission, leading the BCCI to give further directions to players, support staff and team owners.
The board’s dialogue is about the IPL 2026 Captains’ Meeting at which the franchises were informed they will get feedback after the tournament. The answers are supposed to enable the BCCI to come up with the changes to be made for the upcoming season.
Currently there is no indication that the Impact Player rule has been eliminated or has been officially modified. The franchise feedback also might be crucial to determine the fate of the controversial rule: whether it remains the same or whether it is changed or eliminated altogether.
