The beginning of the new regime as the head coach of Chennai Super Kings will start with some crucial events off the field. The IPL 2027 mini-auction is in Goa in December, and the former India fast bowler will have to contribute to the selection of the team before making his debut in the dugout.
Earlier this week CSK announced that Zaheer has replaced Stephen Fleming. With the change, Fleming’s long association with the franchise that saw him win five IPL championships and a very strong partnership with MS Dhoni comes to an end.
The new coach knows that he is coming on board with a legacy that has been established over many years. Zaheer didn’t just speak about leadership change but also spoke of the responsibility of keeping the CSK identity alive while looking forward to the next chapter.

He has a history with Chennai going back to his playing days. Zaheer was with the MRF Pace Foundation for about three years training with Dennis Lillee. He also recalled his days of playing local cricket, staying in Anna Nagar and representing the MRF team and Globe Trotters.
He has already made the city familiar to him, but his new job will present him with very different challenges than he had when he worked as a fast bowler. His supporters’ reaction was special, he said, adding that the environment that he found around CSK had a great sense of belongingness.
The next big decisions the franchise will need to make will be regarding the squad and preparations for the 2027 campaign. The auction will be the first glimpse of what the team will look like under the new management and will be a decent sign for Zaheer.
