Bangladesh have a new yardstick for individual Test batting efforts. In an unbeaten knock, Towhid Hridoy has surpassed every previous Bangladesh batsman with 242 in a single Test innings, breaking Mushfiqur Rahim’s record of 219.
A notable achievement is the fact that Hridoy is relatively inexperienced at this level. The battlesman had only appeared in two Tests prior to this one, and came into the fray when Mominul Haque was forced out after a concussion. This marks his third career at-bat win and one of the biggest batting achievements in the nation.
The numbers emphasize the magnitude of the performance. Hridoy took 359 balls, hit 11 boundaries and four off the ball. That is also a national record in a Bangladesh Test innings for sixes, which was previously held by Tamim Iqbal’s seven.
The innings has also caught the eyes of the batsman for his capacity to handle various phases of a Test match. Phil Simmons, the Bangladesh coach, applauded his judgement, especially in his approach to attack and making lower order batters play. Simmons stated that Hridoy has been responsible for himself and has no need for instructions from the dressing room.
The coach also feels that the youngster is growing rapidly. Simmons said that Hridoy’s misjudges were in an earlier match in Dhaka, but that should be seen in the light of his experience.
West Indies spinner Jomel Warrican admitted that it was a fault that he caused during the innings. It was his side who had been in control until Hridoy showed up and considering the size of their lead. Warrican said the blow was special and he was happy for the batter.
Taijul Islam’s contribution in a century partnership at the end for the eighth wicket and Taskin Ahmed’s help made Hridoy’s effort a first-innings advantage for Bangladesh. The unbeaten 242 is the national record as well as a significant turnaround for the home side.
