Selectors have apparently a different calendar in mind for the experienced wicketkeeper, while being criticised on social media. A senior source told us that Samson is already in the name for India in the Asian Games later this year; hence, there’s no need to include him in the Zimbabwe tour.

Samson had a tough time in the recent T20I series in India, too.

He had taken to the field in a couple of games for Ireland and England but had failed to make his mark before dropping out of the squad to be part of the playing XI. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, the teenage sensation, was given his maiden international debut in the second T20I against England, making him the youngest player ever to play for India in international cricket.

It now looks like the selectors are looking to give him a longer spell at the highest level, as he is now 15.

Strong Competition Behind the Wicket

Samson has been replaced by Punjab Kings wicket keeper Prabhsimran Singh who has performed exceptionally well in IPL 2026.

Prabhsimran was a member of the Indian squad for the 2023 Asian Games and has been a strong performer with his aggressive batting style in the top position. His selection is indicative of India wanting to focus on building depth in view of upcoming ICC events.

A number of Senior Players have also rested.

Samson wasn’t the only notable absentee.

Sundar’s teammates, fast bowlers Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, Prasidh Krishna, spinsters Ravi Bishnoi and all-rounders were also dropped for Zimbabwe’s squad.

Most of these players will feature in India’s ODIs against England and the selectors have opted to play smart in terms of workload management in a tight international schedule.

Rinku Singh and Mayank Yadav Return

Rinku Singh, who missed a couple of assignments recently, is also back in the squad with explosive finishing.

Indian speed bowler Mayank Yadav is also liable for a recall as the side has yet another exciting pace option. In addition to the emerging players like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Suryansh Shedge and Prince Yadav, the Zimbabwe tour is also anticipated to benefit the young Indian cricket team.

The captains of the Indian Cricket Team, Shreyas Iyer and Tilak Varma, were joined by Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan (WK), Prabhsimran Singh (WK), Shivam Dube, Rinku Singh, Suryansh Shedge, Harsh Dubey, Varun Chakravarthy, Prince Yadav, Yash Thakur, Ashok Sharma and Mayank Yadav.

The youngsters will get to the centre of the stage!

The three-match T20Is in Zimbabwe are expected to be a good opportunity for the young guns of the Indian side to assert their presence in the Indian team. The absence of Sanju Samson has sparked a discussion, but the selection committee seems more interested in managing workloads and developing the squad for the future.
