Bangladesh is still hopeful of holding India later this year and its sports leadership has expressed confidence that cricket can contribute to better relations between the two neighbouring countries despite the current diplomatic hurdles.
The series is now planned for September 2026 and is a white-ball series of three ODIs and three T20Is that had been postponed from 2025.
Bangladesh Banking on Cricket to Improve Relations
The State Minister for Youth and Sports Minister Aminul Haque said that sports is an effective instrument for enhancing international ties and the government is hopeful that the visit of India will take place.
The officials have been in touch with the Indian High Commission about the tour and Bangladesh is looking forward to the team coming to the country, Haque said. He also hoped that cricket would help overcome the discord to improve the bilateral relations in the previous year.
The series was originally marred by diplomatic tensions that raised doubts over sporting exchanges being played out bilaterally. In one instance, even Bangladesh’s participation in a previous ICC tournament was called off due to security fears.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has, however, been making further preparations for the home series despite all those developments. The board’s announcement of the tour, made earlier this year, along with the notice of further security measures, if necessary, also came in its international calendar.
Countries’ schedules were announced without the presence of the T20 Internationals, though, and there were positive signs that the series was progressing with India’s Bangladesh assignment.
The Bac club, however, came up with uncertainty again after it put a temporary hold on the process of selling the television and media rights of the India serial, leaving some questions unanswered regarding the status of the tour.
Meanwhile, Sports Ministry has also initiated a probe into the situation of Bangladesh’s earlier withdrawal from an ICC tournament. Separate committees reportedly have been established to investigate the why and whether it was a general diplomatic setback.
No official announcement has come out by either cricket board so far to change the series but Bangladesh is optimistic that it will go on as planned in September, calling the tour a chance to boost sports relations between the two countries.
