India have brought in a big change in their line-up for the upcoming two Test match series against Sri Lanka, with Auqib Nabi getting his first international call-up. The Jammu and Kashmir bowler joins the team after left arm bowler Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out with a left knee injury.
Bumrah was initially meant to be included subject to fitness clearance from the BC SoE (BCCI Centre of Excellence) in Bengaluru but the former pace bowler never regained his form in time and is being replaced by Nabi.
World Cup hero Ranji Trophy hero earns maiden call-up to India.
After two exceptionally good domestic seasons, the Auqib Nabi India squad selection process is initiated.Auqib Nabi India squad selection comes after a sterling two seasons of domestic cricket. The 29-year-old right-arm pacer is one of the most consistent players for JK with 104 wickets in the past two Ranji Trophy seasons.
His performance was best during the 2025-26 season, where he took 60 wickets and proved to be a key asset for Jammu and Kashmir to win its first-ever Ranji Trophy title.
Nabi has also made it to the India A team for the Sri Lanka tour, having made good use of his homegrown talent. He made his mark in the two unplayed four-day games, picking up his first two sixes of the season, including a superb 4 for 58 in the first innings of the first game.
Bumrah’s injury robs the team of a key factor, leading to another setback.
Bumrah is still not fit due to a left knee injury he suffered in the second ODI against England last month. He suffered the injury in the first ODI, and has not been able to get back to form at Lord’s – at least not enough – after undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence, and is unlikely to do so for Sri Lanka Tests.
The injury further postpones Bumrah’s debut in Test cricket, as the Indian squad has been mindful of his workload since the back injury he suffered in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia last year.
Bumrah was then only playing in three of his five Tests in England as part of that workload management plan before he was rested for the one-off Test against Afghanistan earlier this year.
