The fairytale phase of Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s career is still in the making. The young wonder has helped RRI qualify for the IPL 2026 playoffs, and is now just one run away from becoming the first under-19 batter to hold the record in T20 cricket.
Rajasthan finished the league stage season in the top four teams to qualify for the playoffs. Their win in the last group round-robin game propelled them past the standings, and, thus, into the Eliminator round where they faced Sunrisers Hyderabad.
However, along with the team’s qualification narrative, there’s been another subplot that’s been grabbing attention — Vaibhav’s quest to create history.
The 15-year-old batter is already a breakout star in IPL 2026. He is one of the most discussed players in the tournament due to his fearless strokeplay, incredible strike rate and his domination of experienced bowlers. Now, he’s about to make a unique addition to that dream season.
Right now Vaibhav is 17 runs away from the 600-run mark in the tournament. His arrival at the Eliminator will make him the first teenager to score 600 runs in a big T20 tournament.
The fact that he has the potential to do that underscores his season.
During the league stage, Vaibhav’s reply was always on the offensive, going on the attack from the initial over onwards. He didn’t play with caution in IPL cricket, he would often take the international bowlers, and change the game in the powerplay itself.
That’s what his numbers show. He’s hit a lot of balls, a hundred, half a hundred, and an amazing six times for him and he’s become one of the most dangerous hitters of the season.
The stage has become even larger now.
The upcoming Eliminator clash against Hyderabad is not a normal league match, but a knockout match where the pressure is a lot more. These are the games that build reputations for young players. All will now be on Vaibhav’s eyes to see whether he can come up with such a performance again under the brightest spotlight of the tournament.
In the meantime, the playoff format is set. Qualifier 1 between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans will decide who moves on to the Super Six stage, while the Eliminator between Hyderabad and Rajasthan will determine who will proceed to the Super 12, having suffered massive collapses on their home turf. The Eliminator between Hyderabad and Rajasthan will be a battle for life with the Eliminator between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans to host the Super Six stage.
But of all the playoff storylines, one teen chasing a world record could end up being the biggest story of them all.
