Surprise Captaincy Twist as SRH Hands Charge to Ishan Kishan

Only a few days to the commencement of IPL 2026, Sunrisers Hyderabad have caused an unexpected change of leadership when they delegated responsibilities of captainship to Ishan Kishan in the opening matches. Since Pat Cummins is not available because of her back injury, the franchise has made a bold and rather unexpected choice instead of opting towards a more experienced name.

This ruling is an indication of a change of direction by the team management. Instead of taking this as a temporary substitute, Sunrisers appear to be testing a new course. Kishan is also a battler who likes to go hard and plays fearlessly and the franchise seems to be willing to use the same mindset to play their game this season.

The time is also hugely in favour of Kishan. He is entering the tournament with a positive mindset following steady performances in the past several months. More so, he has demonstrated leadership skills in domestic cricket already, and this could have contributed to the franchise entrusting him with this task.

The other remarkable step is the replacement of the captain with Abhishek Sharma as the vice-captain. This is a clear indicator that Sunrisers Hyderabad are not just looking at the one season but are also attempting to create a younger leadership core. It is a long-term strategy that may enable the team to build stability as opposed to depending on the old players.

All the eyes will be on Kishan as the tournament starts to know how he will manage this opportunity. Being a captain of an IPL team is not without pressure, particularly the initial ones where momentum plays a vital role. His performance as a captain and a batter may help not only to define his season but also his future position in the team.

In the meantime, the reentry of Pat Cummins at a later time in the tournament will remain significant to Sunrisers Hyderabad. His presence and calmness in such situations can be used to strengthen the side in a time of need. Until that point, however, the center of attention is squarely resting on Ishan Kishan as he takes up one of the largest roles in his career.
