The biggest challenge for most of the cricketers is to get into the Indian Team. Now it’s a different story for Virat Kohli as he needs to make a decision on when he wants to continue.
The former Indian captain has openly expressed his interest in playing in the 2027 ODI World Cup, but it was more of an emotional than an ambition statement. Kohli did not speak of records or fitness or milestone, it was about something deeper – trust.
A year after becoming the face of Indian cricket, Kohli said it was something he no longer felt like a man who has to prove his worth to others on a daily basis. If the world around him still believes in him and what he brings to the team, he’ll keep giving his all, he says. However, if he has to be the subject of a debate every series, he’d prefer to walk away, rather than stay in doubt.
That attitude gives a good sense of his attitude in the years gone by.
Kohli was successful in his earlier career in debunking the myths. All the criticisms were turned into fuel. Each challenge brought him to a new level of intensity. Now, after over a decade of top level experience, the focus has shifted from demonstrating capability to maintaining a purpose.
What makes his comments strong is that they weren’t hints to retire. In reality they were like the exact opposite. Kohli’s demeanour still seems to be showing signs of hunger, discipline and emotions in ODIs. He quoted the importance of preparation, hard work and commitment – all actions that have been characteristic of his career from the start.
What’s changed this time is that now he desires clarity on his role and respect for what he has already contributed.
There will be significant changes in the way India has progressed in the path to the 2027 World Cup with the younger generation piloted taking over more and more responsibilities. In that transition, Kohli’s experience may prove to be quite beneficial, not only in terms of run-scoring, but also for the standards he brings to the dressing room.
His form may not be as important as his alignment with the team management in his ability to appear on that World Cup squad, and he may not make it to the tournament at all.
Virat Kohli is not seeking assurances at this stage of his life, he’s asking for faith.
