It felt like Vaibhav Suryavanshi touched everything and it seemed to be a success for the past few months. The teenage sensation was the king of the IPL 2026, was the top scorer of the tournament and got a fast-track spot in India’s senior team. He seemed to be on a guaranteed trajectory to stardom, at the age of only 15.
Cricket, however, is a sport that has a way of challenging even the brightest of its talents.
It’s Suryavanshi’s maiden big challenge in Sri Lanka as India A hosts a 3-way series. The left-hander has been in form with a few great deliveries coming from a fearless strokeplay, but hasn’t managed to come up with the big break when it counts.
It’s not low self-esteem. In fact Suryavanshi has been as aggressive as ever when he has come to the crease. It has been a problem to fit his attacking style to a more patient game, particularly when playing on slower pitches where the bowlers will be waiting for errors.
The youngster has been at ease in the initial portion of his innings in all three matches conducted so far. However, each time he has failed to push on after getting set. That’s an unusual development for a batsman who had been consistently scoring big off the plates during the IPL.
The most recent was against Sri Lanka A at Dambulla. Suryavanshi found his stride soon and started laying on the opposition bowlers with a string of boundaries and sounded like he was headed for a big knock. He, however, was given a tactical change for the bowlers and showed his vulnerability, which is being sought by teams nowadays — attacking spin at the start.
His bowlers kept the pace slow, making him take risks and eventually he got a breached delivery. The firing was a sign of the speed at which opponents are getting good at devising individual strategies against him.
Suryavanshi, who has played long innings in the past, is the reason for the surprise in recent performances. He proved that in age-group cricket he is patient as well as a competent shot maker when on display earlier in the year, in a marathon 100 miles.
It is important to remember that the current phase is not a crisis, but rather an important learning phase. All great hitters will experience times when they are under siege. The real question is how fast they learn.
The challenge that Suryavanshi faces is quite evident, that of transforming from a fearless hitter into a complete batter to be able to play in various formats and conditions.
He still has much time left when he is 15 years old. But for one thing, his short career has taught fans: that it would be an error to write him off after a few downfalls.
While it may not be as productive as it was in IPL 2026, the period could prove to be one of the most crucial in his journey as a cricketer.
