One of the biggest talking points of the player auction of The Hundred 2026 was when mystery spinner Abrar Ahmed was selected by Sunrisers Leeds. The auction immediately gained a following due to the fact that the team is associated with Sunrisers Hyderabad whose co-owner Kavya Maran attended the auction.

On the one hand, teams related to the Indian premier league have mostly been reluctant to sign Pakistani cricketers in foreign franchise leagues. That trend is why the decision of Sunrisers Leeds was instant and it became one of the most talked about moments of the auction.

Neither was cheap Abrar Ahmed. Trent Rockets also displayed great interest in the spinner during bidding process. It was indeed the competition that had increased the price and Sunrisers Leeds won the player at a price of £190000 about 2.3 crore in INR. That signing made Abrar one of the most prominent selections of the occasion.

Head coach Daniel Vettori clarified the reason why the franchise was after the Pakistani spinner after the auction. In his opinion, the strategy of the team was merely concerned with the kind of skills required in the tournament. The fact that Abrar could bowl mystery spin and harass batters whom he has never encountered in the past made him a desirable choice.

Vettori stated as well that the franchise had an open approach on the auction table. The management did not limit their options, but rather assessed all the possible players and picked the players that could best fit the squad balance.

Interestingly, Abrar was not the only Pakistani cricketer to getting bid in the auction. Birmingham Phoenix selected Spinner Usman Tariq at the cost of 140,000. Phoenix franchise has no IPL ownership ties as compared to Sunrisers Leeds.

A number of other Pakistani players, were however, not bided. Haris Rauf (fast bowler), Saim Ayub (all rounder), and Shadab Khan (spinner) were all unsold. In the meantime, star pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi pulled out of the auction.

The signing has thus not only attracted a discussion concerning team strategy, but also how franchise cricket is gradually transforming in the various global leagues. In the case of Sunrisers Leeds, it will now be about whether the unique bowling style of Abrar Ahmed will be able to bear fruits once The Hundred 2026 commences.
