India won the T20 world cup semi-finals 2026 with a heart-stopping five-wicket victory over West Indies in Eden Gardens. The Indian team, with a difficult target of 196, finished with the run chase in 19.2 overs. However, it was not a mere win, but it was the most successful run chase in India to date in the history of the T20 world cup and at a very critical time of the event.

Sanju Samson was the key to this unforgettable victory. Samson opened the innings by giving one of the best hits of his international career. He scored at a rate of around 200, but still had not been beaten on 97 out of 50 balls. He had 12 fours and four sixes in his innings but the remarkable thing about all this was that he was level-headed. He never appeared rushed or troubled, even when wickets were dropping about him.

The pursuit of India was not an easy one. Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya all bowed out of pressure and the responsibility was squarely left on the shoulders of Samson. He did not impose big shots but instead dictated the tempo, turned strike playfully and penalized loose deliveries. The key to winning a tense match was the fact that he was able to combine aggressiveness and calmness.

The innings was later lauded by former India head coach Ravi Shastri who pointed out the temperament of Samson. Shastri indicated that talent never bothered Samson, consistency in large moments did. Samson answered that doubt in this Super 8 confrontation with a lot of force. He demonstrated maturity, patience and match awareness before a huge audience in Kolkata.

India had amassed 199 for five by the close of the night, which secured their place in the semi-final with a sense of assurance. More to the point, the right time provided them with momentum. In a tournament such as the T20 world cup, a single game-altering innings can transform a campaign. In the case of India, this was a qualification victory. It can be a career-changing moment in the life of Sanju Samson.
