Welsh Fire kicked off their Men’s Hundred 2026 campaign with a strong win at Rose Bowl in Southampton, taking the lead by six wickets. England opener Phil Salt, who had been put in at the crease, built a strong foundation for the side with an unbeaten 47 to help them reach the target with two balls to spare.
The victory came after a disciplined performance from the bowlers and a partnership between Salt and Joe Root and Rachin Ravindra, who took the lead in the chase despite a few late blips.

Welsh Fire had a decent start with opener Matthew Short hitting in at the new ball and scoring four runs in 20 balls. His getting thrown off briefly put a dampener on the scoring but Salt kept the game in control.
Joe Root and Salt made a solid partnership to get the chase going again but it was denied by a turnaround when Root was caught. Ravindra was instrumental in providing the momentum as he contributed 24 runs with some attacking strokes in his fast bowling to Fire that was under pressure to put the score on.
The Salt-Ravindra stand put Welsh Fire in a huge lead before Southern Brave rallied back with a pair of wickets, first at the hands of Nikhil Chaudhary and then at the hands of Jordan Cox.
But it was not to be as the match quickly turned around for the Brave with Fire needing nine runs from the last five balls. But Asa Tribe hit a crucial boundary first and Salt had then a really towering six over mid-wicket to end things in style.
Fire Bowlers Restrict Southern Brave
Welsh Fire skilfully started their campaign with score 1 with bowlers warming up for a tough batting surface earlier.
Sam Cook did the big break by getting Jamie Smith at the right time and Marco Jansen kept the pressure on with two crucial wickets, including opener Ben McKinney.
Thomas Rew, a teenager, made his debut for his Men’s Hundred with a top score of 41 from 30 deliveries, despite wickets falling around him.
The veteran hitter David Miller had trouble hitting the ball for a while, but then picked up the pace at the end to add 44 points to the game. Welsh Fire bowlers kept Southern Brave from scoring more with a late push from Chaudhary with his worthful cameo.
It was a disciplined bowling display followed by Salt’s composed effort that set Welsh Fire on their campaign winning ways and provided them with a strong start to next up against the Men’s Hundred.
