Ireland’s new T20I captain Lorcan Tucker made a mark in the record books in his debut game against India in Belfast, in the first of his two Test series. The wicketkeeper-batter went further than that, scoring a fine half-century in the middle of a hard spell, before joining the 40 others to become the first player from a Full-Member country to get 50 or more runs in his first three innings in the role of a permanent T20I captain.
The milestone highlighted how impressively well Tucker was getting started as Ireland’s leader. India put the hosts under significant stress at the outset but the 28-year-old was yet again a man of calm and composure with the bat in his hands.
Ireland’s innings started at a terrible level as they lost three wickets in the first four overs to the Indian bowlers. The top order were back in the pavilion, and replacing them was the only thing Tucker could do, and he had opted to build the innings up, rather than take risks.
He took the heat at the beginning, and then he began to run on the other gear. Tucker eventually found the low end of the order when he found his way to both pace and spin, combining smart strike rotation with calculated aggression. He was a valuable middle order option to replace the early collapse and provide the innings some impetus to them.
The half-century came in the 36th delivery of the captain’s 36th match in 36 innings, with his first half-century as skipper. His career finishing time of 50 on the last ball proved to be another testament to his importance to Ireland as a batter, but it was not until then that it was decided.
Not only was it the first time a player from a Full Member country has started a full-time career as a T20I skipper with three consecutive half-century runs, it is the first time a bowler from that country has achieved such a feat. Since coming into the picture as a leader, he continues to impress since that time, and fast too, Cricket Ireland’s faith in him has been well rewarded.
Remarkably, Tucker was also a successful captain for Ireland in the past before being appointed as full-time captain. The displays and his recent outing against one of the world’s top T20 sides only add to his growing trustworthiness as a leader.
The outcome of the game was still the more important goal, but Tucker’s record-breaking knock was one of the highlights of the game. In a country like Ireland, where the nation is still in the process of construction under a new leadership, such a performance will help to build confidence for further international missions.
Tucker’s attempt to become the first player to hit an Irish six to the stumps is the latest reminder of his reliability and ability to captain when it matters.
