Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai

The Wankhede Stadium is the third ranked cricket stadium and second to host international matches today that is located in Mumbai. The pitch has hosted all formats of international cricket events like test, ODI and T-20 matches. A recognized ground to the home grown IPL tournament.

The Wankhede Stadium was built to resolve the dispute between the Cricket Club of India and the Bombay Cricket Association over the tickets distribution. Both the clubs had conflicts for a long time over the tickets division. The Bombay Cricket Association decided to have a new stadium which has been built just a few kilometers from Brabourne Stadium.

The ground got its name after S.K. Wankhede, a politician who took the initiative to build the stadium. The construction work was started in 1974, and the first match was played in 1975, India vs West Indies. The stadium is located at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Rd. Churchgate, Mumbai. The pitch is owned and operated by the Mumbai Cricket Association.

Initially, the ground had a seating capacity of 39,000 spectators before, the pitch was selected to host the World Cup matches in 2011. It underwent renovation work by Shashi Prabhu & Associates as their architects and B.E. Billimoria & Co. as the contractors. After renovation, the seating capacity has been reduced to 33,100 spectators.

The Wankhede Stadium pitch has hosted a number of international matches and World Cup matches in 1987, 1996, 2011 and the recently completed 2023 World Cup. Sachin Tendulakar played his career’s last match at Wankhede Stadium. Ravi Shastri’s six sixes en route to the fastest double-hundred of 123 balls in first-class cricket till 2017 Shafiqullah Shafaq scored a double century in 89 balls.

Wankhede Stadium has a long history of records in its bowl, the first match was played in 1975 India vs West Indies, and the last match was played during the 2023 World Cup matches, India (W) vs Australia (W). The ground has hosted four World Cup tournaments and the final match, India vs Sri Lanka in 2011, where India won the World Cup.
