Eden Garden Stadium, Kolkata

The Eden Garden Stadium is the oldest cricket stadium in India; it is the second largest stadium to house spectators in India and third in the world. The Eden Garden Stadium is also known as the home of Indian cricket, being the first purpose-built ground for sports activities at that time.

Introduction of Eden Garden Stadium

The Eden Garden Stadium was established in 1864, the stadium is now located at Goshto Paul Sarani Maidan, BBD Bagh, Kolkata, West Bengal. The Eden Garden Stadium got its name after Eden sister, and the stadium is built on the ground gifted by Babu Rajchandra Das (Zamindar) to Lord Auckland for saving his daughter from a serious disease.

Initially, the stadium was called Auckland Circus Gardens. Eden Garden Stadium is owned and operated by the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) and is also the headquarters of CAB. The first international match was played between the India and England teams in 1934. Eden Garden has been home to the Kolkata Knight Riders since 2008.

Currently, Eden Gardens has the capacity to house 68,000 spectators. The ground underwent renovations and updates in 1987 to expand its spectator capacity from 40,000. CAB has further planned to expand the spectator capacity of the stadium by more than 1,00,000 in the near future. Eden Garden witnessed more than 1,10,000 spectators in 1996, when the India vs. Sri Lanka semifinals were played.

The Indian team had the highest score of 657 runs against the Australian team in 2001, while the lowest score of 90/10 was made against the West Indies team in 1983. Eden Gardens has hosted the maximum 8 worlds in men’s and women’s cricket formats. The first IPL match was played between the Kolkata Knight Riders and the Deccan Chargers on April 20, 2008.

  1. The top three scorers on this ground, VVS Laxman (1217 runs), Rahul Dravid (962 runs), and Sachin Tendulkar (872 runs) in test cricket format.
  2. The top three wicket takers on this ground, Harbhajan Singh (46 wickets), Anil Kumble (40 wickets) and Bishan Singh Bedi (29 wickets).
  3. Rohit Sharma scored the ODI’s highest individual run (264) against Sri Lanka in 2014.
