The Brabourne Stadium, built in the British era, is an international stadium situated in Mumbai. It has hosted several international tournaments. During the IPL (Indian Premier League), the ground has been a spot for jaw-teething events.
Introduction of Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai
The Cricket Club of India (CCI) wanted to build the stadium, and Lord Brabourne laid the foundation stone of the stadium. Shapoorji Pallonji & Co. was awarded a contract to construct the stadium in 1936. The stadium was completed in 1937 as Brabourne Stadium from the Bombay Gymkhana.
The CCI is the owner and operator of the Brabourne Stadium, located at Veer Nariman Road, Church Gate, Mumbai, Maharashtra. Before the stadium was built on that land, the place was called Bombay Gymkhana.
The Brabourne Stadium has a seating capacity of 50,000 spectators, up from 35,000 spectators before the renovation. As on record, the first match was played between the CCI and the Spencer XI, and the full first-class match was played between Lord Tennyson’s XI and the CCI XI in 1937.
