England white-ball captain Jos Buttler has announced to step down from the captaincy after the end of the Champions Trophy 2025. 34-year-old Butler said this before his last group match between England and South Africa in Karachi.
“It’s the right decision for me, it’s the right decision for the team and hopefully somebody else who can come in and work closely alongside Baz to take the team back to where it needs to be,” Buttler said in a press conference on Friday.
Butler said that he decided to step down from the captaincy because of England’s early exit from the Champions Trophy. England faced consecutive defeats against Australia and Afghanistan in Lahore, ending the team’s journey. England’s ODI form was already not good. Just a week before the tournament, England had to face 3-0 defeat in the series against India in Pakistan and UAE.
“Yeah, I think it’s quite clear that this tournament was going to be important results-wise for my captaincy and obviously two losses and being out of the tournament with a bit of a hangover of some tournaments before, I think I just probably reached the end of the road for me and my captaincy, which is a shame,” Buttler said.
“I think overriding emotions are still sadness and disappointment, but I’m sure in time that will pass and I can get back to really enjoying my cricket and also be able to reflect on what an immense honour it is to captain your country and all the special things that come with that.”

Jos Buttler took over the captaincy of the England white-ball team after Eoin Morgan’s retirement in 2022 and performed well early on. Under his captaincy, England won the T20 World Cup in Australia in the same year. But after this the team’s performance continued to deteriorate.
England was eliminated from the group stage in the 2023 ODI World Cup. Then England also got a shock in the 2024 T20 World Cup, when India gave them a big defeat in the semi-finals in Guyana.
After consecutive defeats, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) appointed Brendon McCullum as the new coach of the white-ball team in 2025. McCullum was already the coach of the Test team. However, the pair of Butler and McCullum failed to lead the team to victory. This year, England lost 9 of their last 10 white-ball matches.
Butler captained England in 44 ODIs and 51 T20 matches, leading the team to 18 and 26 wins respectively. But his win-loss ratio is the second worst among England captains who have captained the team in at least 15 matches.
